In the last 18 months literally dozens of new mobile platforms have entered the market, giving museums ever more options for planning, producing, and launching new experiences for visitors on their mobile devices. But how can we ensure that the content we create will outlive the technology and vendors we select today?
A successful meta-data standard for mobile content would help us protect our investment in tomorrow’s mobile experiences:

  • A mobile standard would allow museums to migrate the content and structure of a mobile experience to new platforms;
  • In addition, the mobile standard would allow the same mobile experience to be used on a number of different mobile devices today;
  • Standards also empower museums to choose the authoring tool that best fits their staffing and workflow needs, and then chose whatever mobile device is best for their content – even if these tools are provided by different vendors.

The TourML (tûr moil ) specification offers a working – but preliminary – example of how such a standard might work. In order to develop community consensus and encourage support by commercial partners, two collaborative mobile summits will be held this fall. By the end or 2010, we aim to certify an initial version of the TourML standard in hopes that it will be adopted by the museum community.

We need your help! We hope that you might join us at one of these two summits to formulate the future of mobile for our community. It’s important that we have a good representation from a wide range of museums and commercial vendors so that we can take the initiative in planning how mobile experiences should grow and be managed effectively.

No technical expertise is required to attend the summit, but a familiarity with producing mobile tours, apps and websites for museums is required. Bring your best ideas and be prepared to work. A sample agenda for the 4-hour summit will include:

  1. Why the museum community needs a mobile standard
  2. A brief review of the proposed TourML specification
  3. Testing use case scenarios and revising the standard
  4. Next steps for minting a mobile standard

Help us build the agenda and the standard, and RSVP either in the comments fields below, or to Rob Stein or Nancy Proctor to let us know how you can participate!

    Great idea.
    In Denmark some of the museums are starting up a simular project, so we can develop a common app for Iphones and other smartphones, which can be used at all museums.

    This is a great proposal!
    At the Jewish Museum Berlin (Germany) we are preparing the migration of the museum’s audioguide from iPod classic to iPod touch. I will definitely give the TourML a chance. But as far as I can see there are no provisions in TourML for multiple language support which are crucial to us in Europe.
    I am looking forward attending the Tate Handheld Conference as well as the subsequent TourML Workshop.
