Fluid Engage

Fluid Engage is a major open-source project, part of the Mellon-funded Fluid Community, that aims to (from the Fluid Engage website):

  • create a service layer that provides an interoperable mesh for existing applications available to museums in all three environments [web, mobile & physical space], is extensible to enable the integration of new tools and where necessary fills gaps in functionality (e.g., location-aware and context-aware personalized mobile applications)
  • extend the work of Fluid Academic to provide a personalizable, reconfigurable user experience layer for museum applications and generic applications applied in museums and galleries
  • develop the tools and resources needed for museums to create accessible exhibits and experiences in all three environments, thereby meeting legal commitments while at the same time making the experiences more usable and engaging for all visitors

Jan 22 & 23, 2009, members of the Fluid Engage project are meeting in Toronto; several are also contributors to the Museum Mobile wiki and participants in the ‘Museums to Go‘ initiative. We’ll be twittering and blogging from the meeting, so feel free to send us your questions and comments on the proceedings, either by leaving them here or to @nancyproctor; please use #fluid.
