One aspect we are working on now is how to "securitize" the devices. The point-of-sale system the client will use can take deposits and credit card holds but the layout of the space is not a closed loop: there is no way for renters to come back to the rental desk to pick up an ID or get their deposit back.

In addition, we'd like to use a database to logout devices upone renting, and attach their identiy codes to a renter. (we'd get good usage data out of the system as well) But this requires that the database be accessible 80 floors up where the iTouches will be returned and checked back in leading to a logitical headache.

We will probably take a layered approach using RFID tags and sensor gates, a wi-fi "out of bounds" application, and plain old "return this or you will be charged" intimidation.

Brief update: we're still on track to rent 700 iTouch devices in the New Year. It's such a challenge as the operating hours are 8am to 2am and the building gets about 10,000,000 visitors a year.

We're going with big iFrogz headsets for brand visibility. I've designed stacking modules that hold about 35 headsets. Tempting to hand the user the disinfectant wipe and have a trash can there.

We have staff of course, 2 or 3 at the sales counter, and a mobile POS system to sell in the queue.

I do mean to publish details. BM could use the pointers!

If your budget can handle it, I'd think disposable earbuds - maybe branded Empire State Bldg so they're also souvenirs - would be nice. Rewind Rome 3-D has nice white ones they give away with their tour...
Otherwise I'd go with classic headsets and clean them with disinfectant wipes. I presume you have staff if you're handing out 700 players?
